In 1992, I was excited to participate in one of the early New Warrior Training Adventures held in the Chicago area. In the weeks prior to my experience, I had a dream I fell on the sidewalk of St. Cyrils, my grade school. Then, in the dream, a group of men dressed in black quickly came to help me. As they turned me over on my back, one of them used their pointed fingers like a laser and split open my chest. I looked down and realized my heart had stopped beating.
The men then each placed both of their hands in my open chest and jumpstarted my heart. My chest sealed shut and the men disappeared. This was a remarkable premonition of what I would experience and witness during my weekend. Since then, this program has expanded around the world and boasts centers delivering support and healing experiences to thousands of men.
This is the story I will tell on Friday, April 28.
About Bill Martin, LCSW:
I'm in private practice specializing in the treatment of trauma, especially for men abused as children. I'm on the faculty of the Chicago Center for Family Health and a former visiting lecturer at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration where I was nominated by my students for a Cultural Diversity Award in teaching. I moved back to my home city of Philadelphia in 2021 where I currently practice, write and teach.
