Workshop Description:
This is a multi-media workshop exploring the science of trauma & memory.
Using Dr. Ford’s accusations of sexual assault as a starting point, this workshop will provide an overview of relevant trauma/memory research and the importance of mind-body methods in the treatment of trauma.
Format will be power-point presentation with video examples to enhance learning, live-demonstration of guided imagery techniques and psychodrama.
Video excerpts of therapy with a male rape survivor will be shown.
There will be many videos, time to relax, and group-exercises to help the flow of the day.
Workshop goals:
At the end of the day, participants will :
- Understand the important ethical and social justice issues related to abuse & assault
- Gain a working knowledge of key trauma/memory concepts relevant to clinical practice
- Explore multiple case studies including the sexual assault accusations by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, the Chowchilla, California kidnapping, & WWI "shell shock" syndrome
- Learn the value of mind-body therapy methods through clinical case presentation and videos focusing on early childhood abuse, rape and a survivor of suicide.
- Watch video excerpts of therapy with a male rape survivor
- Observe a live-demonstration of the core guided imagery technique, "creating a safe place."
- Trace the history of trauma/memory research from the late 19th century to the present.
- Receive a copy of the powerpoint slide presentation, scripts for guided relaxation & imagery techniques, & workshop bibliography
Who Should Attend:
This workshop is recommended for social workers, therapists or students in the child welfare, mental health, domestic violence, law enforcement, medical field and any interested community person.
Presenter: Bill Martin, LCSW
Bill is a therapist in private practice, faculty member of the Chicago Center for Family Health and former visiting lecturer at the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration where he was nominated for a cultural diversity award in teaching by his students.
He's facilitated over 100 trauma related psychodramas, is certified in Guided Imagery from the Academy of Guided Imagery and EMDR practitioner for many years.
In 1990, he recovered a traumatic memory of a domestic violence event which occurred in 1968.
